Obama Flips on Public Funding; Blames McCain
So much moral good was expected from "campaign-finance reform" that Barack Obama's announcement yesterday that he will opt out of public financing for his Presidential run is an historic moment. Senator Obama is the first candidate since the law was passed in the 1970s not to take matching funds for the general election. Even candidate George W. Bush, flush with cash in 2000 and 2004, didn't do that.
Share revenue: State's revenue sharing choices have weakened local services
When most people think of taxes, they see images of Capitol domes and remote bureaucracies. When they think of public services, they have images of what local governments are expected to do every day: police the streets, put out fires, pave roads, maintain parks.
PRUDEN: Obama has trouble with the image

Obama's Decision Is Biggest Threat Yet to Public Financing System
By opting out of public financing, Barack Obama may do more to shatter the system than all of the loopholes it has spawned.
GM: 18,657 Took Buyouts, Early Retirements
General Motors Corp. said 18,657 of its hourly workers will leave the company by July 1 through buyout and early retirement offers. The company previously said about 19,000 would accept the offers. It released final numbers on Thursday.
McCain picks Michigan site for regional office
FARMINGTON HILLS -- John McCain's campaign will open a regional campaign office for Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana here Monday. Former Indiana GOP Executive Director Jennifer Hallowell will be the regional campaign manager and already is in the state setting up operations. Al Ribeiro will direct efforts in Michigan, where McCain won the 2000 Republican presidential primary.

STERLING HEIGHTS -- The Michigan Public Service Commission will investigate the restoration efforts of Detroit Edison and Consumers Power after hundreds of thousands of Michigan customers were without power for days due to recent storms.
McCain Scores Big With Offshore Oil Drilling Proposal
John McCain has drawn first blood in the political debate following Barack Obama's victory in the primaries. His call yesterday for offshore oil drilling - and Bush's decision to press the issue in Congress - puts the Democrats in the position of advocating the wear-your-sweater policies that made Jimmy Carter unpopular.
