Flawed Candidate needs a good VP pick.

When voters go to the Polls in a general election, they are usually voting against a candidate instead of voting for them. This is even more so this year where each party has selected a candidate that is badly flawed.

For McCain, except for the war on terror, he is at best a moderate and is any many cases more likely to side with democrats than republicans. Examples of this is Immigration, Tax cuts, McCain-Fiengold, and the list goes on. In a normal election cycle this would doom a candidate. This is because the base of the Party (Conservatives) are not as likely to go out of their way to vote for such a candidate let alone donate money for him.

However...

In Obama we have an equally flawed candidate. One needs only look at what is going on in the Democrat party to understand that a broad base of the Democrat party will not vote for Obama and are just as likely to cross over and vote republican. In Obama's case, he does have the core of his party behind him (Liberals and African Americans). His problem is with Non African American blue collar workers which makes up a broad range of the democrat party.

And then their is Bob Barr running as a Libertarian. Who on the issues looks more like the Republican candidate than does McCain. (http://www.bobbarr2008.com/issues/).

What does this all mean in the end. Many conservatives like myself are looking to the VP Pick to determine their level of support. Make a good pick like Rice or Romney, and I will more likely stay on board. Make a pick like Huckabee, and I will look to head another way. However, there are other Huckabee supporters who may not vote for McCain unless Huckabee is on the ticket.

In the end, who wins the Whitehouse may very will hinge on who McCain selects as his VP.

If you don't want McCain to work with Democrats, then you will have to vote Republican in both the House and Senate races.

John McCain for 2008!

And, if McCain selects Romney, I might just support Bob Barr. Although if Romney continues to clean up his act like he did a couple of weeks ago when he disavowed his ridiculous "freedom requires faith" comment, I might be willing to vote for him. He's got a long way to go though.

...or Huckabee - the story about Huck being at the top of McCain's list notwithstanding.

I continue to believe that it will be Sanford or Pawlenty, with an outside chance of it being Carcieri. Carcieri's odds are longer only because he is in his 60s.

I think it will be Pawlenty (who is acceptable) but hope it will be Sanford (who is my personal first choice).

I really don't know much about Donald Carcieri, what can you tell me about him?

I don't know a whole lot about his record other than that.

Daniels? No way by red oakster

He's up for re-election this year. Besides, if McCain can't carry IN, it will be a blowout for Obama.

I disagree with you. by Section9

Rice is pretty conservative on most issues, especially 2nd Amendment issues. Romney has become conservative since he left Massachussetts and realized he might have to run to the right of George Allen to get the nomination. Unfortunately for him, George Allen got punked.

That said, while I'd love to see McCain pick Rice per the "Dick Cheney" test of the Vice-Presidency, I don't believe he will. I believe the Movement Conservatives will want to be satisfied, although I don't believe that such a move (T-Paw) will help McCain win. I think he ends up with T-Paw to grab Minnesota (hopefully T-Paw has a decent statewide organization to make it worth the candle, otherwise he'll spend the entire month of September rolling out this Nobody for nothing, and lose Minnesota in the bargain....).
